Sekintani : Sekintani Norihiro at mograg gallery

【Japanese version is below;

When I bought HARIBO’s Gold Bears for the very first time while growing up – I took instant gratification from some wild glitter chaos created and was fascinated by the unknown. Although I tore gummy candies out of the bag, I stared at every part of those – colors, shapes and textures – for a little while. Without eating. And I was secretly wondering if that elasticity structure highlighted people’s lust to arouse, but somehow I couldn’t tell this feeling to anyone. Maybe because I was too shy to explain why, and on top of that I eventually loved the taste of the gummy candies. Lately the ongoing exhibition at mograg gallery entitled “Sekintani” reminded me of that day, it came as a great surprise to me in many ways.

Relocated from Kokubunji to the current place located right next to Shin-Okachimachi station (it’s literally like a hop, step and jump) in July 2015, mograg gallery keeps asking art’s accessibility, what that is all about, offering greater opportunity to artists who wish to curate a show then present and promote their own works, converging eye-catching yet funky apparel products collaborated with Aquvii AAT shop (for making and merchandising) in the gallery space to deeply analyze how they as a gallery and visitors affect each other; there is full of quirky sense of humor with plentiful items suspended from the edge of its space, and I like their spirit and uniqueness. Also, they have their own radio show entitled ‘mograg radio‘(podcast, broadcated in Japanese) every Thursday taking in interviews, discussions and news – mainly on art and film.

Thus gallery’s practice and Sekintani the artist’s world with collage works have been synchronized. This show, right there, is to celebrate freedom of expression with a reflection on his past, present, a desired future to live in physical and spiritual realms at once, and it was like when I develop enjoyment of solitude in the city full of the neon lights. In autumn 2014 when Le Dernier Cri, the French zine publishing organization, curated and ran two of mega group exhibitions such as ‘Heta-Uma’ in Marseille and ‘Mangaro’ in Sete featuring Japanese artists, especially in the underground art scene, Sekintani and Oki-chu, the co-founder of mograg gallery, met there through the participation and they started to build a close relationship. Now actively showcased in European underground art scenes, Sekintani lets you take a step into unknown territory at the exhibition — and it’s wonderfully fun.

-Sekintani La Norihiro, installation view at exhibition “Sekintani”

-MAIKO

Thank you Edgar. Tokyo’s creative community is – has been – unique as far as I’m concerned, and I am happy to hear you got excited and/or took some time to think of coming here again!
