Furerume / Sight Touching : Talion Gallery

【Japanese version is below;

I just noticed something about when I go to galleries for interview; it rains often. There seems to be much to be gained by my gallery visits on rainy days and I feel comfortable with the point where the two elements -visual scene and soundscape- cross, so I am not complaining. In fact, it was also a rainy day when I made a visit to Talion Gallery and I happily got thoughtful listening to the soothing sound of rain pattering outside.
Since its inception in 2011 (formerly located in Yanaka then moved to the current location in Mejiro), Talion Gallery has held exhibitions in the space showcasing contemporary artists’ pieces in many genres to harness the power of the virtual world to share inspiration in the real world. Also, the gallery offers artists the opportunity to curate an exhibit -annually or bi-annually, depending- as well as a way to get their pieces into the world. It is great to see how people in creative community show a mutual respect for each other.
The current exhibition in the gallery space is a place to showcase four artists’ works combined painting, photography and sounds and video installation in varying proportions, entitled “Furerume (Japanese) / Sight Touching”. And this title comes from the ideas of visible experience that we individually had in the past as it lives in our memory and will be provided from now on, and how ephemeral but meaningful that is to affect to the art world exploring connections between it and the fundamental part of everyday life, and viewers enjoy the concept described by artists that sinks into all of their senses in a relaxed way while in gallery.

kamiyamaTakahiko Kamiyama installation view at exhibition / 神山貴彦「両の皺」, 2015, pigment and pencil on paper, 260×195 mm

Takahiko Kamiyama – Kamiyama is the youngest of all the participating artists. Besides mastering of oil painting accumulated as his knowledge and skills the works for this exhibition reflect his aesthetics as alternate reality; with a result of his mistrust of traditional/established technique of painting, viewers are reminded of a stereotype to break down and/or how visual experience affects their mind – by the working materials, egg white and powdered pigment. His world is equally perplexed and surprised playing with how dark colors flow into another tonalities.

gotoHidekado Goto installation view at exhibition / 五嶋英門「深呼吸」, 2015, video, media player, SD card, skateboard, audio speaker, accordion and mixer

Hidekado Goto – Goto’s vision is full of sensory pleasures. His aesthetics have evolved from several different disciplines including music, film and art starting his career in music in late nineties, and this installation combined sounds, video and clay creations is the program to make his keen interest in exploring sphere of human experience -especially physical and emotional effects- stand out. And it is great to see what he refers to memory and how it’s automatically shaped in our minds link to the projecting pattern of his visual image onto the wall among the installation; the image created is blurred, a little fogged and roundish with a feeling of intimacy, and his subjects – random people – are constantly in motion.

shiigiShizune Shiigi installation view at exhibition / 椎木静寧「四月(三貫清水)」, 2015, archival pigment print, 250×200 mm each

Shizune Shiigi – Shiigi is involved in the exhibition not only a participating artist but the co-curator. His latest works here are all about abstract things he’d captured while out for a walk. His subjects including an old house and landscape seen near his shelter are void of feeling; it’s a nihilistic world but has a strange beauty created by a complete silence among the optical transparency. And there’s a question like ‘what’s the essential truth contained in nothingness?’ – and ‘it’s visual experience’ is probably an answer.

2015, oil on canvas, 455×380 mm

Miyuki Yamashita – In previous years Yamashita divided her time between Tokyo and Shizuoka with the frequent use of Tokaido bullet train. The paintings create an intersection of her visual experience from the train ride such as the changing landscape she’d watched from the train window, abiding interest in design method applying for a pages for a fashion magazine and the scenes from her current lifestyle; having a multi-faceted approach, how she has used pigments on canvas is a sight to see including stroke and coloration and reminds viewers of a fluid motion in three dimensions.
