— ART, FASHION & MORE !
“Electric wires and neon glittering places in Tokyo have inspired me long time.” Tokyo artist Misuzu Oyama clearly shows her deep love to her homebase. It’s always interesting to hear about the way people have perceived themselves in a certain way blending into the environment.
Oyama was born and raised in Tokyo and I believe that Tokyo activates her creativity to inform the character. In addition to the keen sense of colors, her paintings are always filled with a power of narrative-style storytelling. When I saw her artwork for the first time, I was simultaneously amazed and thrilled; it was like I was looking at pieces of a puzzle coming together. She discovered the magic of art for the first time in her life when she was 3 during her family trip to Interlaken, Switzerland, and her mother brought her a chance to draw the beautiful landscapes there —to create a special memory. Keeping a picture diary eventually became her life-long work.
Having expanded area of her activities in Japan and the US, such as illustrating picture books, live painting performance, poster design for some of annual cultural events, wall paintings and collaborated work with fashion designers since 2007, Oyama values on the existence of colors and how each color functions;
“I usually try to think of both the emotion I feel at that time and how colors effect when I create something. My awareness of the role of colors is a key to enhance those and for a fun layered design. I can even transport a fairytale into my work seeking magical connotations.”
Oyama currently participates “AAT” Aquvii Art THE TERMINAL, the art event in Harajuku, Tokyo, which runs through Tuesday, May 6.
