“Scary-cuuute!” This is how I choose to describe ZAORICK, the accessory brand designed and handmade by Yuka Taniwaki.
Since the launch of the brand in 2006, her signature use of silicon has made a lasting impression and her work stand out. I believe that her designs correlate Tokyo’s radical character very closely with the nuance of fantasy adventure.
Although her education background is specifically in women’s clothing design, Yuka decided to make a transition to accessory design nearly a decade ago. Something about costume jewelry design struck her when she was in France to explore a different approach to fashion design. Right after the light bulb moment, she got back to Japan for a fresh new beginning; once worked in a fact-paced company where produces a wide range of accessories for a while—to see the market and to contemplate whether she wanted to become an independent designer. And eventually, she got to start her brand ZAORICK in Tokyo in 2006.
In her words, the primary image of ZAORICK is “a combination of toxicity, boldness and lucidness”. The expression sounds a bit weird but actually works for the brand; her keen color choice, texture representation and careful selection of material for every last detail tell me what it is all about.
ZAORICK‘s items are available in Japan and the selected stores in Dubai, Russia and Shanghai (as of April 2014). I genuinely believe that you simultaneously receive a surprise and a delight when you meet the scary-cute items.
