— ART, FASHION & MORE !
This past week, I spoke with artist Teppei Ikehila at the show held at Gallery Conceal, located in the heart of Shibuya, Tokyo.
Looking at his extraordinary/sharp color sense, you would relish the mix of adult sophistication and childlike abandon in an unconventional way. So, what I wanted to do was not only to feel Ikehila’s world in person but also to know what he looks his things to handle, which are painting, wall painting and Office Bacteria, the collaboration work with Paris-based jewelry designer Kanae Briandet and scientists.
Although he used to stick to one specific theme for his work until early 2008 with his career, he started to feel like expressing a vivid sense of existence in a more conciliatory approach. His style eventually did change representing a departure from the old pattern of his paintings- he got to value “day-by-day variation” which is more lively and reflects the extraordinary color sense in his work. After people hit by the Tohoku earthquake suffered an immeasurable loss of their daily life in 2011, he has given painting workshops for many people and been offered for wall paintings in several places in Japan hoping that they can gain the feelings of respect for the past and embracement for/excitement about the future.
Besides his own works, Office Bacteria has many connotations. One day a fusion of art and fashion started up at INRA, French National Institute for Agricultural Research, because the artists Kanae Briandet and Ikehila happened to observe how bacteria can beautifully change in a chemical reaction.
Today they set up environment for creation exchange (Painting by Ikehila & styling/designing to shape into an accessory by Kanae) in Japan and France to make Office Bacteria‘s one-of-a-kind accessories.
Among his works which are curious and sympathetic yet powerful, I get that he is such a beautiful frontier.
