Talking about age is a key to an understanding of Japanese culture. People are self-conscious about age and it’s always shown in someone’s profile, such as resume and even in the articles and TV programs featured public figures. Oops I’m not saying this topic will make you feel self-conscious about age, but I’ve observed and thought it can be a good method to estimate something specific, especially in Japan.
I am 31 years old. As my preference for outfit has become even more widely varied, I suddenly began to be curious more about age-targeted brand to see what’s inside. Therefore I got a chance to meet the Japanese label Gout Commun that targets Japanese female professionals who are in their 30’s, and popped into the showroom to look at Spring/Summer collection.
“This is the most receptive generation that have been really busy with many things- working for long hours, socializing, pursuing their hobbies and some other.” said Akihiro Ootaki, the President of Grand Cascade Inc., the company that started up Gout Commun in 1997.
Their items are simple but made in well-considered fabrics depending on color of a style, and many elements of their collection seem to correspond their designs. Once I wear their item, I’m amazed how careful they are for details; they mainly focus on producing figure-flattering clothes which reflect potential and existing customers’ big concern about body shape after much research. I believe their items gave me an instant pleasure that my body shape look much better (seriously!!!).
Ootaki also said that he is so happy to concentrate on the priority area, which is to focus on making products targeting Japanese women in this certain age group, because the people love not only to identify their favorite style but also to hear and see many new ideas to effectively accept for their daily life. His smart idea sounded really interesting to me and it turned out the brand has provided a solid product with a loyal and enthusiastic following, I’m sure.
